UFC 129 RECAP
MACHIDA SENDS COUTURE RUDELY INTO RETIREMENT
THE best fighter on the planet, Georges St. Pierre,(GPS) soundly defended Jake Shields in title defense of his UFC welterweight BELT. It was a solid effort in a 5 round decision with Shields mounting little offense before 55,000 at Toronto’s Rogers Centre. More significantly is GPS suffered an eye injury midway through the fight. He fought the remainder with one good eye and was given a 60 day suspension by doctors at the Ontario Ministry of Consumer Services. GPS must be cleared by Ophthalmologist before he can return to the ring.
Jose Aldo was clearly the superior fighter with a 5 round title defense decision over Mark Hominick. Mark suffered a nasty Cephalohematoma (see pic) during the fightand a post-fight 60 day suspension to boot. Cat Scan is required prior to his return to the ring.
Lyoto Machida, aka The Dragon, delivered a stunning “Crane Kick” knockout to the chin of UFC legend, Randy Couture. That sent him rudely into early retirement and is certainly the leading candidate for “Knock out of the Year”. Machida was too fast, too elusive for the older, Couture and could never close the distance. The result was a perfect Karate kid, ‘Miyagiesque’ crane kick at 1:05 of the 2 round. Couture, 47, ended his legendary, UFC Hall of Fame career with a bitter pill.
