Just Good Shit

The Scott and BR Interview

By  |

You know them as San Diego’s Dynamic Duo. Some would say Scott Kaplan is the pessimist and Billy Ray Smith is the optimist, but I disagree.  I think they both speak it the way they see it..   I was lucky enough to sit down with them this week for an hour and really got to understand what makes them tick.  You think they have fun on the air?  You should see them off the air.  I really felt like I was hanging with two guys who were best friends and that Pratty and Carlos were their little brothers.  They joked with each other constantly and they laughed the entire time. I wish I could have this much fun working and actually get paid for it.  The purpose of me meeting with them was to really find out what makes San Diego’s Dynamic Duo click and I left in total amazement.  They are even cooler and more fun in person than on the air.  You can list now at work on your computer  Listen Now TMTMTL@RollinSD.com

Scott and BR tell me about your day. The show starts at 6 am and you are done at 10 am right? What time do you get up to prepare?   Do you do most the night before?  Scott: We start prepping as soon as the show goes off the air.  I am always on the internet and on the sports channels looking to see what is going on in the world of sports.  We are not stat guys so we don’t prep in that way, but we need to know what has happened and then we form our opinions on that.. We have our daily routines each day and we fill in around them like Wednesday we have the Golden Johnson award and Thursdays we do a movie quiz. Carlos will book the guest the night before and Pratt will prepare some of the sound bites.  Before we go on the air we know the direction of the show, but also have to be flexible to go where our listeners want to go.  BR: Most everything we will be talking about happens before 9 pm at night.  Scott and I will come up with things we want to discuss and work them into the show. We have to get some of the sound bites prepped and the rest you just get to sit back and listen to :-).

What I love about your show is the dynamic between the two of you.  Some shows that are co-hosted seem like the host are faking it.  You two really seem to get along and enjoy each others company. Scott: I know some co-hosts that despise each other. One is jealous over the money the other makes and they just don’t like each other as people.  We do everything together.  We do all of our spots together and even negotiate our contracts together.  There are no secrets with us.

How long have you been working together now? BR: 10 yrs in April.  Did you always get along this well?  BR: It took maybe a month and we were off to the races. It seemed like we had know each other for years.  Scott: I remember talking to John Carney and telling him I had an opportunity to co-host a show with Billy Ray and he said that will be amazing. You both will have different opinions on almost every subject based on your backgrounds and the dynamic will be awesome.  50% of the listeners will agree with you Scott and the other 50% will agree with Billy Ray.

People think it is easy to host a show and talk for 4-5 hours straight and they don’t understand how difficult it is.  You always have to be informed, entertain the audience and be in a good mood.  Are you ever just not in the mood to go on the air and talk sports? Scott: Yes there are days when I am not feeling 100%, but I love what I do and I pull through to make it happen.  If a person sat down and emptied his or her brain out with ever story and detail they could remember it would take maybe 2 days.   We have to do this for 20 hours a week and keep everyone informed.  We have fun doing it, but it is definitely a challenge at times.  BR: I also love this job and am extremely blessed to be in this position. With any job or occupation there are days when you don’t feel your best, but I love talking sports so it really is easy for me.

You guys were off last week and you called an emergency broadcast last Monday after the Chargers lost to Cinci. It was awesome and this shows how much you both love what you do.  How did you pull it off and who’s idea was it? Scott: We felt it was something we had to do.  There had to be someone on locally to support the fans and give them somewhere to vent and talk.  So who make the call to go on the air?  BR: Everyone else was on vacation and we were here in San Diego.  We basically picked up the phone at the same time to call each other once we knew the Chargers were not going to win and said we have to do this.  This was something that had to be done.

Tell the audience how difficult it is and what they should expect if they want to be on TV or Radio.   That it is just not enough to love sports and want to talk about them.

Scott: I received advice from someone year ago and he said  you either want to be in this business or you need to be in this business.  If you want to be in this business great, good for you, enjoy it, but you will not make it.  You have to need this.   Wanting this is a desire and needing it is a necessity.  Guys want it but don’t realize what it takes.  Guys have to be willing to have to go to the smallest markets and put in their time. When I left Pitt and was working as a production assistant I thought I was better than everyone at the station at that time.  You have to check yourself and realize you are not as good as you think and put in your time. Be willing to do whatever it takes to make it.

Here is how I picture your day after you get off the air and I think the audience does also.. you get off the air and go home and listen to sports radio on the ride home, get home and get on your computer and look at all the sports websites and of course RollinSD.com and then have ESPN on in the background. Is this what you do to stay informed?   BR: I have it easy because my wife goes to work at 3 PM because she is a New Caster and I can just sit and watch any and every game I want.  Scott on the other hand has 4 kids so it is not that easy.   Scott: I don’t watch TV all day. With the internet now it is easy to spend a few hours on it and get caught up on everything that is going on in the world of sports.

OK last week in the Syracuse K State game the kid from K State saluted the crowd for 2 seconds after scoring the potential tying touchdown with 1 14 left or something like that.. do you think the NCAA is too tough? Should the refs be allowed to make a judgment call or is it black and white?  What next are they going to give  penalties for kids smiling or high fiving after a touchdown?  Scott: I have a big problem with this and not so much because of the call, but because the ref went up the kid right after and said “you just made a big mistake”.  It is like the refs are out to prove something.

You both get to talk to stars of all types.    I assume you must not get star struck, but who are the few athletes you have met or interviewed where you just said holly shit I am talking to XYZ?   Scott: Definitely and it was Mohamed Ali.  I couldn’t believe I was sitting next to him talking to him.  BR: I grew up with my dad playing for the Colts and grew up around a lot of great players so I was always used to sports figures. I get more in awe around actors and musicians.

I want to play a game and I call it  20 in 60.. I want to ask you 20 questions and you have 60 seconds to answer them..you can pass if you with and we can go back.. the time it takes me to ask you the question does not count towards your 60 seconds..
