The Aztecs have climbed the mountain and claimed sole ownership of the Mountain West Conference for San Diego. Some may say that San Diego is cursed because we don’t win a sports championships. The 2011 Aztecs Men’s Basketball are now back to back defending champions of the Mountain West Conference.
The season so far has been one for the history books. After being nationally ranked for the first time at the beginning of the season, the Aztecs took San Diego along for a twenty game winning streak the ended at the hands of a superhuman from BYU: Jimmer Ferdette. After the defeat, the Aztecs kept winning only to be heart broken once again on their home court by Fredette and the BYU cougars. As the Aztecs winning percentage grew so did their national ranking but always not far behind were the pesky BYU Cougars nipping at our tails. When the regular season ended the Aztecs were tied with BYU and were declared co-champions of the Mountain West Conference’s regular season.
With a goal to get to and do well in the big dance, the Aztecs entered their conference tournament with their eye on the future. In tough games you have to find a way to win. In their first match up, the Aztecs did enough to beat Utah and bid them a fond farewell as they plan to join the PAC 10 next year. The Utah coach Jim Boylen was fired a day after the Aztecs fired them out of the tournament.
San Diego then took on the tournament hosts UNLV in the semi-final. It took until the last ten seconds of the game to bury the dagger and slay the Rebels on their home court. In the final moments, UNLV had the ball on offense with the game tied and thirty seven seconds left on the clock. The Aztecs stepped up, batted a ball, and forced a turn over. The Aztec’s senior point guard DJ Gay dribbled the ball up the court, waited for a lane, drove it and popped up a floater four feet from the basket. He drained the shot with four seconds left and UNLV was too shocked to answer back. The win was legendary and once again San Diego found a gutsy way to pull out a victory that sent them to the tournament final.
The Aztecs punched their ticket to face Fredette for the third and final time. Even though Fredette was hitting his shots, our Aztecs were hammering the win home with emphatic dunks and beast-mode rebounding on the boards. The Aztecs were more physically imposing and that set the tone for the San Diego victory. The BYU junior Brandon Davies who was suspended because he has sex with his girlfriend was the X factor of lack there of. At one time the Aztecs were leading by twenty and ended the game winning by eighteen. BYU had some surges that got us nervous but the Aztecs were determined to win and did what was necessary to keep BYU’s shots out of the Aztec’s hoop.
With all the national talk about how great Fredette is… our SDSU Aztecs proved to the world that San Diego is the best and the west and rightful Kings of the Mountain.
The Mountain West Championship was BYU’s last basketball game in the Mountain West Conference, now that they will be playing in the West Coast Conference next year. With a blatant history of shots, slanted officials and high and mighty attitude’s the BYU Cougars have been a tantalizing and vexing rival. The thorn in the Aztecs spine is now just another victim of the Montezuma Monster. San Diego we beat the Mormons be proud of yourself. The sweet feeling of shutting down BYU has been a long time coming and raising a trophy to declare the Aztec’s dominance over BYU is what MONTEZUMA’S REVENGE is all about.
